Forestry Communities

Forestry communities (sometimes called logging communities) are mostly found around the Canadian Shield where lots of trees grow. Trees are an important natural resource in Ontario because people use them to make all sorts of things like building supplies, paper and furniture.

People who work in the forestry industry have many different jobs.  Scalers measure trees and decide which ones are ready to cut down.  Harvesters are in charge of cutting down the trees safely and getting them onto transport trucks.  Truck drivers drive loads of trees to the sawmill where the trees are cut into smaller pieces so they can be used for building things or making paper.  Tree planters are responsible for replanting trees so we will always have forests.

When we cut down trees, we are taking away living things that help balance the air in our atmosphere.  Trees  give off oxygen, which humans and other animals breath.  They also take in carbon dioxide which we breathe out.  Trees also provide habitats for many different types of animals and act as "anchors" to help soil from being blown away.
